This course will introduce the most important concepts related to Supply Chain in the fashion industry, and illustrate strategies and techniques for effective Supply Chain Management.

Introduction to DigiMooD for CCIs

This MOOC is one of the 6 MOOCs regarding the Eu project “DigiMooD”, aimed at developing and testing the offer of a set of innovative and interdisciplinary educational modules in “Digital Entrepreneurship for the Creative Industries”, with a specific application to the Fashion Industry, its companies’ branding, narrative strategies and the digital service models.

Course description

This specific course gives an overview of Supply Chain Management in the fashion sector.

It addresses the concepts of Supply Chain and Supply Chain Management, starting from basic definitions, explaining which are the main goals and priorities of a supply chain in the fashion industry, and critically analyzing the specificities of the fashion sector compared with other industries.

All relevant steps of the Supply Chain Management are considered, including the upstream part – in terms of relationship with suppliers -, the warehousing, and the downstream part in terms of physical distribution. Novel approaches and emerging technologies, supporting supply chain efficiency and effectiveness are discussed.

After taking this Sprint MOOC you’ll be able to understand the specificities of Supply Chain Management in the fashion sector, know how the basic processes - such as procurement, warehousing, physical distribution – work, and assess the impact of novel technologies on said processes.

  • Week 1 - Supply Chain Basics

    Week 1 introduces the concept of Supply Chain Management in the fashion industry, and show recent trends affecting fashion supply chains including the use of Artificial Intelligence to improve the supply chain performances.

  • Week 2 - Developing a sustainable supply chain

    In week 2, we will focus the attention on the important topic of how to manage a sustainable supply chain. To pursue this goal, the week will investigate two main topics, for instance how the seasonal collection development is connected with supply chain decisions and how fashion companies should design their products and their supply chains to assure a sustainable future.

  • Week 3 - Managing suppliers

    In week 3, we will focus the attention on the management of suppliers for the success of fashion and luxury firms. We will discuss the role of procurement, analyse the procurement process in details, and introduce useful frameworks to support Make-or-Buy decisions and spending analysis.

  • Week 4 - Managing logistics

    Week 4 will focus on logistics and distribution, with particular attention placed on how to manage the warehouse of finished goods, and how to use technologies such as RFID to guarantee tracking and tracing along the chain and fight against illegitimate trade.

Assessment

Your final grade for the course will be based on the results of your answers to the quizzes you will find at the end of each week (Weekly Quizzes). You have unlimited attempts at each quiz, but you must wait 5 minutes before you can try again. You will have successfully completed the course if you achieve 60% (or more) of the total course score. The maximum score possible for each quiz is given at the top of the quiz. You can see your score in the quiz on your last attempt or on the 'Grades' page.

Certificate of accomplishment

You must be registered in POK through Politecnico di Milano personal account to obtain the Certificate of Accomplishment. It will be released to anyone who successfully completed the course by achieving at least 60% of the total score in the assessed quizzes and filling the final survey. 

You will be able to download the Certificate of Accomplishment directly from Politecnico di Milano web services.

The Certificate of Accomplishment does not confer any academic credit, grade or degree.

Alessandro Brun

Alessandro Brun

Alessandro Brun was Associate Professor of Quality Management at the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano. His main research streams are related to Supply Chain Management, Quality Management and Operational Improvements in manufacturing and service industries; he published more than 200 among papers, books and book chapters on the same topics. At MIP Graduate School of Business he was Director of the Master in Global Luxury Goods and Services Management. He was founder of the Sustainable Luxury Academy.

Federico Caniato

Federico Caniato

Federico Caniato is Full Professor of Supply Chain and Purchasing Management at the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano. He earned a Master of Science and a PhD in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. He is the director of the International Master in Supply Chain and Procurement Management of MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business. Federico Caniato is member of the board of the European Operations Management Association (EurOMA).
He authored several international publications on various Operations and Supply Chain Management journals, and he is Associate Editor of the Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. The research interests of Federico Caniato are in the field of Supply Chain and Purchasing Management, in the last years he has focused on Supply Chain Finance, Supply Chain Sustainability and Supply Chain Resilience. He focused in particular on the Food and Fashion industries. He is the director of the Supply Chain Finance Observatory, the leading research initiative in Italy on the topic, in close collaboration with the international Supply Chain Finance Community.
He is also one of the directors of the Food Sustainability Observatory.

Cecilia Castelli

Cecilia Castelli

Cecilia Castelli (PhD in Management & Industrial Engineering) has over 15 years field experience in the Fashion & Luxury sector, achieved by leading projects Supply Chain design/improvement projects for major and leading brands, varying from apparel, to leather goods, to shoes, to jewellery, to beauty. She also worked as Executive Coach for top managers in this sectors.
She is author of several publications and is often invited as speaker to conferences and workshops dealing with trends/challenges in the luxury sectors.
Recently, she focused on the role of new digital technologies (mainly AI tools) in changing the rules of competition in the fashion industry.
She currently works as Transformation Projects Manager at Ratti SpA and is part of the Extended Faculty of MIP - Politecnico di Milano School of Management.

Valeria Iannilli

Valeria Iannilli

Architect and Associate professor at Politecnico di Milano - Design Department, where she is part of the “Design and Innovation Cultures” research subsection. She is President of the Fashion Design Programs (Bachelor and MSc) at School of Design, Politecnico di Milano and co-founder of FIP|Fashion in Process, Design Research Laboratory of Design Department/Politecnico di Milano. Her research interests concern retail design processes as the expression of the identity of a company to promote the construction of an active dialogue with users’ communities.
She is expert of retail design and management of narrative processes as place of cultural exchange in “culture intensive” industries. She developed didactical and research projects for national and international institutions and author of international publications and consultant in didactic and research activities for Italian and foreign institutions and companies.

Hakan Karaosman

Hakan Karaosman

Hakan Karaosman is a sustainability management professional and academic researcher, focusing on supply chain sustainability in the fashion industry. His investigation addresses how to spread ethical and environmental responsibility across fashion supply networks. He holds BSc. in Environmental Engineering, MSc. in Management in Engineering of Energy and Environment and double degree PhD in Industrial Management.

Marco Melacini

Marco Melacini

Marco Melacini is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering. He currently lectures on Logistics and International Distribution. Since 2007, he has been the Director of the Physical Distribution course for executives at MIP, the Politecnico di Milano Business School. He was involved in over 20 research/technology transfer projects, and since 2011, he has been scientific responsible for the Contract Logistics Observatory. His current research interests include: warehousing and material handling system design, global logistics networks, supply chain risk management and sustainability. He is an author of over 100 publications, including contributions in international scientific journals, international books and conference proceedings.

Giovanni Miragliotta

Giovanni Miragliotta

Giovanni Miragliotta is Associate Professor at the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is member of the Faculty of MIP, the Business School of Politecnico di Milano, and co-director of the Italian Observatory on Smart Manufacturing and of the Italian Observatory on Internet of Things. He is the project manager of Internet of Things Lab of the Politecnico di Milano. Together with some methodological topics, his major research areas are New Mobile Technologies and their impact on Operations and Business processes, Operations management in Luxury Companies, and Supply Chain Management.

Antonella Moretto

Antonella Moretto

Antonella Moretto is Assistant Professor at the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano. She teaches Supplier Relationship Management at the MSc of Management Engineering and she is part of the core faculty of the MIP Graduate School of Business in the area of Purchasing and Supply Management. She is Director of the Observatory Supply Chain Finance of Politecnico di Milano and Deputy Director of the MBA and Executive MBA Division at the MIP Graduate School of Business. Since 2016, she is executive committee member of Ipsera, the international research association of Purchasing and Supply Management. She is also member of EurOMA (European Operations Management Association) and of AiIG (Associazione Italiana Ingegneria Gestionale). Her main research interests are related to purchasing and supply management, supply chain finance, and sustainable Supply Chain Management, with a main focus on fashion and luxury industry: on these topics, she has published papers on peer reviewed international journals. She was involved in several consulting projects in the area of Purchasing and Supply Management.

Elena Tappia

Elena Tappia

Elena Tappia is Assistant Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering. She currently lectures and undertakes research on logistics and she is Director of the Contract Logistics Observatory of Politecnico di Milano School of Management. She is author of a number of publications, including contributions in international scientific journals and international conference proceedings. Her main current research interests include automated warehousing systems, logistics models for e-retailing logistics, logistics service provider business models and design of global logistics strategy.
